TOK Question How does knowing more about the social, cultural, or historical context of a work of art has an impact on our knowledge of the work itself? When we look at the context of a piece of art, it generally makes us ask a question to ourselves. What art is it and what does it talk about and convey? There are many different contexts upon which art can be based, and there may even be multiple within one. If a context is first visualized then it can have a clearer picture to the artist of what they might want to create and what meaning it should convey to the audience. Contextual information can deepen and improve our understanding of an artwork. With some additional contextual information about the time, the culture, and the maker/artist of an artwork, we can become more informed. We can tell the style of art based on the artist itself.
