August Entry 1 - Discrimination of people
TOK ESSAY
Our society is a very diverse one. It has many different people. Populations with different skin colors, hair, ethnicity, religion, etc... These things are features inherited from previous generations. These are characteristics that make us unique. It makes us who we are. It gives us something to be proud of. Something we can value in life and be happy that we stand out from the people around us. However anyone looks, their characteristics are not something you should judge a person upon. What matters most is whats inside. Their flaws are their beauty and their imperfections make them their own kind of beautiful.
Putting down people just because of things that happen, or the way they look is wrong. Just put yourself in their place and think of how you would feel if someone did that to you. Now coming to the topic. Genetic modification. This is a very heated discussion amongst societies. People are contemplating whether it should be legal or not. Now genetic modification is not a bad thing. Getting a person to look different by altering their genetic makeup is not something bad. However many people have different opinions which I am going to state and discuss.
Firstly people talk about ethical branches. How it is just bad to interfere with gods natural creation process. This may be reason, however doing this to save a life or make a life better can over ride this statement. However god has created these things for a reason. A women is strong enough to bear anything, and honestly genetically modifying and growing a baby is entirely up to the parent. Sometimes if it is a medical reason, then the baby is grown in an artificial environment, which is completely fine.
However there are parents who want their children to be perfect. No flaws at all. This is something that cannot happen naturally. No child is born perfect, everyone has their own flaws, and that's what makes them beautiful. Altering the genetic makeup of an organism can really change the way the fetus grows. The environment first of all, is not close to a mothers womb. There might not be sufficient nutrients for the fetus to grow. Then comes immunity. Immunity would decrease considerably as the mothers antibodies would not pass on to the baby. When it comes to milk, the mother wont be able to produce any for the baby as she has not given birth to it and hence formula milk can only be given and not breast milk which is completely packed with nutrients for babies.
Nothing is different about these people and it is done to the parents consent. Their still humans just like us, and the fact that they are not treated like that is sad. Discrimination for every feature is at large all around the world and it must stop. Treat people like you would treat yourself. That is the beauty of life; living in harmony among everyone. It can make life so much more better.
